Young is a town located in the south-west region of New South Wales, Australia. The town was founded in 1826 by Sir Thomas Mitchell and named after the British politician, Sir John Young. Young is best known for its rich history and diverse culture that attracts tourists from all over the world to this day.

The first inhabitants of the land where Young stands today were the Wiradjuri people. They were hunters and gatherers who lived in the region for thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans. The Wiradjuri people were famous for their intricate rock art, and many of their paintings can still be seen in caves and rock shelters around Young.

The European settlement of Young began in the early 1820s when Sir Thomas Mitchell explored the area and established a new town on the banks of Burrangong Creek. The town was initially built as a stopover for travellers and traders on their way to the goldfields in Victoria. The discovery of gold in the region in the 1850s brought an influx of settlers to the area, and the town grew rapidly.

One of the most significant events in the history of Young was the Lambing Flat Riots of 1860-1861, also known as the Chinese Gold Rush. The riot was a result of the tension between European miners and Chinese immigrants who flooded the area in search of gold. Violence erupted between the two groups, and the riot lasted for several weeks until British troops arrived to restore order. The Lambing Flat Riots remain a significant event in Australian history and are seen as a reflection of the country's changing demographics during the 19th century.

The town's economy continued to grow throughout the 20th century, with the establishment of the Cherry Festival in 1948. The festival, celebrated annually in Young, attracts visitors from all over Australia and is a celebration of the town's rich history and agriculture. Today, Young is known as the "Cherry Capital of Australia' and is home to several famous cherry orchards and vineyards.

Young has played an essential role in the growth and development of Australia, and the town's history, culture, and identity is deeply intertwined with the country's. The town's rich history and culture continue to inspire and attract visitors from all over the world, making it one of the most iconic destinations in Australia.
